Haircut 100 – Love plus one – bass performance

I always loved this bass line so here I present to you my version of Les Nemes’ pop masterpiece. His bass part has such a great feel and it’s not too hard (if you’re a beginner) for most of the song. Give “Favourite Shirts” (from the album Pelican West) a listen as well if you get a chance.

Duran Duran – Last Chance on the Stairway – bass lesson

I tried something different with the camera angle this time. If you want to see what the other hand is doing watch “Rio!” By the way, I’m not stoned! It’s just been really hot here in LA ;+)

Queen – You’re My Best Friend – bass lesson

A classic song with a bass line that deserves to be featured. I believe this was one of Queen’s first big hits in the USA Lots’ of playing up high on the neck. Using neck pickup in parallel mode, passive with the treble turned down 1/4 turn. No effects (not even compression), no amplifier, just straight to protools with my Mbox and me Dell laptop. As usual, just giving you a feel for the part. I’m not trying to present it “note for note.” Just go for the FEEL. UPDATE: Just noticed, in the verses, when I play the run C, D, D#, E, G, A, C- the D, D#, E, and the last C (on the downbeat) should be an octave higher than what I play. I learned this song on headphones and it was a bit deceiving. Like I said before, the feel is most important. I just like being obsessive as well!

Wham! – If you were there – bass lesson

I wanted to challenge myself and learn another bass player’s style so I chose the wonderful Deon Estus and a great Wham! bass line – “If you were there” from the Make it Big album (originally recorded by the Isley Brothers). He is another highly underrated musician for sure! Learn more about Deon here: en.wikipedia.org If you get a chance check out “I’m your man” from the Music from the Edge of Heaven album. Deon takes a bad-ass bass solo in it! Long live George Michael, Deon Estus and Wham!…

Kajagoogoo – Too Shy – bass lesson

By popular demand I present this incredible bass line from the truly talented Nick Beggs of Kajagoogoo. Playing my G&L L2000 (BABE Edition) in single coil mode, both pickups active, with everything all the way up. I am playing it “my way.” Please don’t bother with “that’s not exactly right” comments. That’s getting quite old. Enjoy! UPDATE: I may re-do this video but for the meantime know that the 5th and 6th notes in the chorus are F and G not G and A as I played it. So, the first part of …

Duran Duran – Shadows on your side – bass lesson

I always avoided learning this one because I thought it would be difficult. I was right.

The Power Station – Get it On – bass performance

My humble attempt at mimicking Bernard Edwards. This is the Get it On (Bang a Gong) (7″) version. I used my OLP MM3 5 string (It’s a 9.99 bass!) since Bernard played what looks like a G&L. UPDATE: Yes, I have seen the Power Station video but John Taylor himself recently stated that he played the solo and Bernard played the main groove. So there! Let’s put it to rest already.

Duran Duran – Save a Prayer – bass lesson

Save a Prayer – Live version from the Arena album. This is an amazing bass line, especially when you really analyze it in a technical sense. There are chromatic runs that begin on F# over a Dm chord and seemingly sudden breaks, for example. Lots of “passing tones” as well..all typical of John Taylor’s early style. As usual the live version is slightly different than the album version. Check out the double stops (major 5th’s) at the end.
